Using the iOS App

Guide to using the Hometrace iOS app for inspections in the field.

Using the iOS App

The Hometrace iOS app is built for inspectors working in the field—basements, attics, crawlspaces, and everywhere in between. It works offline, syncs automatically, and keeps your inspection data safe even when connectivity is spotty.

Getting the App

During early access, the iOS app is distributed via TestFlight:

  1. You'll receive a TestFlight invitation email
  2. Install TestFlight from the App Store if you don't have it
  3. Open the invitation link to install Hometrace
  4. The app requires iOS 15.0 or later

Logging In

  1. Open the Hometrace app
  2. Enter your account email and password
  3. Tap "Sign In"

Use the same credentials you use for the web platform.

The app uses a tab-based interface:

  • Dashboard: View your inspections and start new ones
  • Inspections: Access all inspections (in progress and completed)

Dashboard

Your home screen shows:

  • In-progress inspections you can resume
  • Quick access to start a new inspection

Inspections List

Browse all your inspections. Tap any inspection to open it and continue working.

Offline Mode

The iOS app is designed to work without an internet connection—critical when you're in a basement or rural area.

How Offline Mode Works

  • Automatic: The app detects when you're offline and continues working seamlessly
  • Full functionality: You can create inspections, add photos, and record findings
  • Local storage: All data is saved to your device until you're back online
  • Sync indicator: The app shows your connection and sync status

When to Use Offline Mode

  • Home inspections in areas with poor cell coverage
  • Basements, crawlspaces, or metal-roofed buildings
  • Rural properties
  • Any time you want to conserve battery by disabling cellular data

Preparing for Offline Use

Before heading to a site with limited connectivity:

  1. Open the app while connected to WiFi
  2. Let any pending data sync complete
  3. You're ready to work offline

Taking Photos

Photos are a critical part of every inspection.

Capturing Photos

  1. Navigate to the appliance or item you're inspecting
  2. Tap the camera icon
  3. Take the photo using your device camera
  4. The photo is automatically attached to the current item

Photo Tips

  • Lighting: Use your device flashlight in dark spaces
  • Stability: Brace your device for clearer shots
  • Context: Capture enough surrounding area to show location
  • Close-ups: Take detailed shots of specific issues

Storage Considerations

  • Photos are stored locally until synced
  • Check your device storage before large inspections
  • Photos sync automatically when online

Syncing Data

The app syncs your work automatically when you have an internet connection.

How Sync Works

  • Automatic: Syncing happens in the background when you're online
  • Progress indicator: Watch sync status in the app
  • Reliable: If sync fails, the app will retry automatically

Manual Sync

Pull down on the screen to refresh and trigger a sync.

What Gets Synced

  • Inspection data and findings
  • Photos and attachments
  • Notes and observations
  • Completion status

Tips for Field Use

Battery Management

Inspections can take 2-4 hours. Maximize battery life:

  • Lower screen brightness in well-lit areas
  • Enable Low Power Mode for long inspections
  • Disable cellular data when working offline
  • Close other apps before starting
  • Carry a portable charger for all-day schedules

Storage Management

  • Check storage before inspections: Settings > General > iPhone Storage
  • Minimum recommended: 2-3 GB free space for typical use

Best Practices

  • Let data sync while you have WiFi
  • Take photos as you go, don't wait until the end
  • Add notes immediately while details are fresh
  • Review your work before leaving the property

Troubleshooting

App is slow or laggy:

  • Force close and reopen the app
  • Check available storage space
  • Restart your device if problems persist

Photos not appearing:

  • Grant camera permissions: Settings > Hometrace > Camera
  • Check storage space
  • Ensure the photo actually captured

Sync not working:

  • Check your internet connection
  • Try switching between WiFi and cellular
  • Force close and reopen the app
  • Contact support if errors persist
